It’s my birthday. Woohoo! I’m 39 today.
All this talk and here it goes…my 40 before 40 adventure list started today.
You’re wondering what the heck did I start with.
Here’s a clue.
Yep, I did it.
I got my nose pierced.
I know what you’re thinking. This mid-life crisis thing is hitting her hard and she’s lost her mind.
I have a couple things to say about that.
For one, it’s not actually my mid-life crisis because like my grandpa said, If you want to live to a 100…”
So technically, I have 11 more years until I have a mid-life crisis. Ha.
Second, I have a different theory about a mid-life crisis.
Maybe it’s not a crisis at all (well, unless someone completely goes off the deep end and starts hurting themselves or others).
But for most people, I think its a time when we just realize that we’ve been on this planet long enough to stop worrying and waiting to do what makes us happy.
Life is short. Even for those that live to 100. In the history of the Earth, the Universe… that’s just a small speck of time. Accidents happen. Cancer strikes. We lose people we love. We have regrets.
We definitely have no guarantees.
We ought to make the most of our short time and stop wasting it waiting…maybe next time, maybe if I had more money, maybe if I had a different job, maybe if everyone wouldn’t think I was crazy…
I’ve spent so much time worrying about what everyone thinks.
Trying to prove that I’m old enough. Good enough. Skinny enough. Beautiful enough. Smart enough. A good enough mom. wife. daughter. friend. teacher.
It’s held me back at times. I second-guess myself. Feel self-conscious. Start slouching. Chewing my hangnails.
Well, I’m done with that. Or at least I’m trying.
Don’t worry. I won’t go entirely crazy.
I’m just going to be all about finding balance. We need to think about others. It’s keeps us in check, but when it holds us back, we only send the wrong message.
And as Beau says, people can do whatever they want as long as they’re willing to deal with the consequences.
So right now my consequence for getting my nose pierced is that it hurts and the OCD worrying started kicking in about all kinds of ridiculous things like infection and my nose falling off to worrying about what everyone will think (baby steps).

Good job Angie. I had a nose ring for many years and loved it. I fell pray to the insecurity of getting a “real” job out of college and took it out. I have regretted that many times.

I had no idea! I love the thought though! I know a place to go if you ever want to get one again! Although that really hurt 😁
